MSI's Wind U160 netbook available in the US
MSI announced new gadget, Wind U160 netbook at CES, and we've taken a closer look. Sitting alongside the U135, the new Wind is expected to come in at just under the £300 mark in the UK.
The new model gains a brand new polished case, a bumpy trackpad and a Chicklet keyboard with elevated keys. It includes Windows 7 Starter, a 1.66-GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, a 250-GB hard drive and a 6-cell battery that lasts 7.5 hours, according to MSI
The 1kg 10.1-inch netbook features a completely new chassis for MSI and has a premium finish with a brown glossy lid and a dimpled trackpad (which we're not a big fan of). The keyboard, on the other hand, seemed perfectly usable.
Its keyboard still suffers from an awkwardly small question-mark key. I disliked the puny trackpad on the first MSI Wind (which I used to own), and I dislike the U160’s bumpy trackpad even more: The purpose of the bumps is to mouse around more accurately, but I was doing the opposite.
Would we buy it? Well yes – at £300 it represents great value for money and if the price comes down even more it'll be into the realms of a steal.
Under the hood, the U160 packs Intel's latest 1.66Ghz PineTrail N450 Atom processor alongside 1GB of memory (upgradeable to 2GB) and a 250GB hard drive. Graphics are provided by Intel's GMA 3150.
Looking for Pine Trail? Now MSI's Wind U160 netbook is on sale for $380 to fulfill

Nokia X6 16GB Reveiws
Nokia's just announced a 16GB version of its crowd pleasing, capacitive touchscreen X6 to compliment the current 32GB model. The persistence of manufacturers when it comes to touchscreen mobile phones has to be applauded. Nokia X6 get its very own baby brother in the form of a new 16GB model.
Unlike its 32GB sibling, the 16GB version doesn’t Come with Music but its sizable on board storage still boasts enough space for 5,500 tracks. Outside that substantial storage sits a lush 3.2-inch widescreen capacitive touchscreen and four new finishes: all black, all white, white with pink highlights and white with yellow highlights. Read on to find out what else is in store.
The X6 looks like a traditional slider phone - at 13.8mm thick it certainly looks like it could accommodate a physical keyboard. However, there are hardly any buttons to be found as the 3.2-inch touchscreen is capacitive, theoretically making a physical keyboard redundant.
Images are taken care of with a 5-megapixel camera sporting Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash. Shooting videos is a joy, not just because of the camera but the TV-out function enables you to watch your masterpieces on the big screen, too. And of course, you can edit your videos right there on the device.
Running the latest version of Symbian^1 the Nokia X6 16GB boasts up to 18 days standby time, 11.5 hours talktime (GSM), 4.5 hours of video playback and a whopping 35 hours of music playback! That’s enough time to listen to roughly 12 per cent of the tracks stored on the device.
The new Nokia X6 is compatible with the all-new Ovi Maps, offering free walk and drive navigation and tons of extras including Michelin and Lonely Planet guides.
Gamers will be happy with the pre-loaded games including Spore by EA, Asphalt4 and DJ Mix Tour by Gameloft.

Buy Nokia N900 – Cheap, Reliable
Nokia has recently announced the highly stylish and well designed mobile phone, N900. Though it has nothing to do with N-series mobile phones, it has really eye catching attraction. However, the N900 is not there for the mere sake of difference - a tablet and a phone, it tries to get the best of both worlds. These are worlds though where Nokia feels at home.
One thing to definitely note about the Nokia N900 is the 16M-color WVGA screen, which is virtually unmatched by other smartphones - platform limitations are hard to get around. There is of course the Vodafone 360 H1 produced by Samsung and running LiMo but it's very much a niche device. It has a feature of adding QWERTY keyboard, which turned out pretty comfortable despite the three-row layout, and things are starting to get there.
If you are using internet on your mobile phones then Nokia N900 is the best for you. The internet tablet genes are strong in the Nokia N900 so connectivity and web-browsing are its greatest virtues. The large high-resolution display and great typing skills are the right kind of backup but we've seen plenty of similar packages already.

Panasonic unveils DMC-FX66, DMC-TS2, DMC-ZS5, DMC-ZS7 and DMC-ZR3 Lumix compacts
Panasonic has announced the latest handful camera, Lumix compact cameras. This eye catching camera featuring both the new Venus Engine VI and Venus Engine HD II. These features will perform quicker with better noise reduction. Panasonic’s camera is compatible with the approaching SDXC cards too.
• DMC-FX66: This one's a 14.1 megapixel slim camera with an F2.8-5.9 25-125mm (5x zoom) ultra-wide-angle lens (with Power O.I.S lens-shift stabilization). The 720p video capture and 1.06 second start-up time are sweet too, but no AVCHD Lite here. On the back there's a 2.7-inch 230k-dot screen with wide viewing angle. All this is just 5.11 ounces including battery.
• DMC-TS2 (FT2): This camera has a lot in common with the FX66 above -- same sensor, same image stabilization, same scene modes (but with three extra), same focus modes and same screen. The main differences are its AVCHD Lite 720p video format, F3.3-5.9 28-128mm (4.6x) lens and added ruggedness -- waterproof to 10m, shockproof to 2m, freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and dustproof. It's of course slightly heavier too -- 6.63 ounces including battery.
• DMC-ZS5 (TZ8) and DMC-ZS7 (TZ10): These two appear to be twins, except the former has a smaller screen (2.7-inch with 230k dots instead of 3-inch with 460k dots) and lacks GPS, AVCHD Lite and mini-HDMI port. Both do 12.1 megapixel pictures and 720p videos, have F3.3-4.9 25-300mm (12x) lens with lens-shift stabilization, and have identical scene and focus modes. With battery these weigh 7.55 ounces and 7.69 ounces respectively.
• DMC-ZR3 (ZX3): Whoa! Another 14.1 megapixel camera which does AVCHD Lite. The specs are almost identical to the TS2 except for the lens (F3.3-5.9 25-200mm 8x ultra-wide-angle) and lack of ruggedness. It weighs 5.61 ounces with battery.

Google Nexus One – a threat to iPhone
Google has recently announced Google Nexus One, the Google phone which challenges the throne on which the iPhone had been reigning thus far. With this phone, Google has entered the scenario with an innovation that simply pushes the limits a level higher. Nexus One, the Google phone, surely challenges the throne on which the iPhone had been reigning thus far.
The following 6 evident reasons why the Google Nexus 1 can possibly better than the iPhone’s status in the market.
1. Screen – First things first. When you look at a smartphone, the first thing that catches your attention is its screen. Clarity and size of the screen would be a major turn on for any smartphone lover. Well, in this aspect, the Nexus One surpasses the iPhone easily given its bigger screen and also higher resolution which contributes to better clarity.
Nexus One has a 3.7-inch screen compared to a 3.5-inch screen of an Apple iPhone.
The Nexus one also has a widescreen WVGA AMOLED touchscreen with 800x480 pixels resolution display where as the iPhone has a 480x320 pixel resolution at 163 ppi. This simply means that Nexus One is more appealing when it comes to watching video and playing games or browsing the net as it gives sharper details and livelier images.
2. Camera – Next thing one would look for in a high-end phone would be its camera. Well in this aspect the Nexus One again defeats the legendary iPhone conveniently as the Google phone has been blessed with a huge 5-megapixel camera which is way ahead of the 3.15-megapixel camera of the iPhone 3GS. The zooming capability combined with the LED flash of Nexus One leaves the iPhone behind as the Apple device lacks both zooming option and a flash. Nexus One users can also include location of photos by syncing it with the phone’s AGPS receiver.
3. Processor – Any smartphone would surely boast about its processor and when it comes to the Nexus One it can confidently scale above the iPhone with its powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor. The iPhone, on the other hand, has ARM Cortex A8 600MHz processor, which is very slow and is nowhere close to the performance of the Nexus One snapdragon processor. In other words, things seem to happen faster and crispier on a Nexus One than on an iPhone.
4. Operating System – First and foremost, the Android OS used in Nexus One is an “Open system” so that if someone creates a better browser, address book, calendar, or email client, you can install it. Now Nexus One is the first smartphone using the Android 2.1 operating system which is an advanced version of the Android 2.0 OS used in Motorola Droid. The new operating system has better graphic, widgets and customizable homescreens. It also makes multitasking much easier and you can listen to music, surf the net and call a number at the same time without any hindrance or any delay.
The open source platform further enables a user to carry out things that are not possible on an iPhone because of its proprietary iPhone OS (based on Mac OS). Things such as getting updates from Facebook or receiving a Tweet from a friend on the phone, sending emails and listening to music from a website, all can be done in one place rather than spread across programs.
5. Memory – It’s always better to have more. And when it comes to storage capacity surely higher storage is always an added advantage. Nexus One comes with a 512MB RAM which makes it faster compared to the iPhone which has a 256MB RAM memory.
Also Nexus One comes with a 4GB microSD card that can be fitted in its microSD card slot, and the option to expand up to 32GB makes storage of songs movies and other files makes Nexus One better and more convenient than iPhone, which comes with only two choices of internal storage - 16GB and 32GB.
6. Voice Recognition Feature – This feature has been mentioned in the specs of almost all the smartphones in the market but none could give the purpose and the real usage for such a feature. Nexus One, on the other hand, has taken this character of the phone a notch higher and has made it look really useful. The voice recognition feature is compatible with almost all the software and applications and is of practical use, as users can use the voice recognition feature for text messages, emails, updated of community sites, search Google, call contacts, as well as obtain driving directions. On the other hand, the same function in iPhone is of little use as it is not compatible with most of the applications and this makes the feature rudimentary.
The Nexus One surely wins the battle ‘big time’ in this aspect. The Nexus One, given its superiority to the iPhone is extremely reasonable, as it’s cheaper than the iPhone. Nexus One comes at $529.99 unlocked, which is about $70 cheaper than iPhone 3GS (16GB). And a subsidized Nexus One on a 2-year T-Mobile contract comes at $179.99, which is $20 cheaper than a subsidized iPhone 3GS and hence it’s a better value for money product, given its superiority in its features and functionality.

8 new things in next generation iPhone
Rumour mills are abuzz with Apple set to launch the next version of its iconic iPhone. Media reports suggest that Apple is in process to update its current iPhone model --iPhone 3GS.
So, what all new features will the next-generation iPhone or iPhone 4.0 have? What will iPhone 4.0 have over and above iPhone 3GS?
Read on to find out the new features that iPhone 4.0, set to release in June 2010, will bring in for the users.
New Plastic Casing:
Speculations are rife that the next-generation iPhone will feature a touch-sensitive plastic back casing similar to the company's Magic Mouse released in October 2009. Apple Magic Mouse lacks any physical buttons on its solid acrylic surface. It allows multi-touch controls that are closer to that of a MacBook trackpad.
OLED Screen:
iPhone 4 is said to sport an OLED touchscreen display. With major cellphone makers shifting to AMOLED displays in their latest devices, this seems to be a must from iPhone 4.0
iPhone 4G will have an OLED screen and support video chat, wrote Korea Times quoting a high-ranking official of KT, Apple's exclusive local partner in South Korea.
Google's Nexus One also sports an AMOLED touchscreen display. Apple's current iPhone 3G S features a 3.5 inches LCD display.
Cut, Copy & Paste
Cut, copy, and paste words and photos, even between applications. Copy and paste images and content from the web, too. Quickly cut, copy, and paste words with a tap. You can also copy content from the web, then paste it into an email or text message.
Camera:
Reports say that the next iPhone will have a higher megapixel camera vis-a-vis the current model. The upcoming model is likely to have a 5 megapixel camera which will bring it on par with its newest rival Google Nexus One. Gossip mill also says that Apple will introduce an LED flash in the new model.
Apple's current model iPhone 3G S ships with a 3 megapixel camera with video capturing, auto-focus mechanism and editing capabilities. In fact, Apple was widely criticised for retaining the same 2 megapixel in its 3G model released in June 2009.
New OS
Rumour mill is also abuzz with the news that the iPhone 4.0 will port the updated version of iPhone Operating System. Apple had announced version 3.0 of the iPhone OS for the iPhone 3G S released in June 2009.
A Korea Times report speculates that the fourth-generation iPhone would carry dual-core microprocessors and more powerful graphics.
Removable Battery:
umour mill also suggests that iPhone 4.0 will have removable batteries. However, this seems highly speculative considering that Apple 's all latest laptops also sport non-removable batteries. However, reports say that Apple plans to include a user-replaceable battery in its upcoming model.
Apple had earlier refused to use removable batteries in all three generations of iPhones reportedly saying that this will add bulk and weight to the device. However, almost all iPhone rivals come with user-replaceable batteries.
Video Chat:
Video chat feature too may finally debut in the new iPhone.
Currently iPhone 3G S does not have a front-facing camera for video conferencing. This means the device is not capable of sending videos across a Wi-Fi or cellular network in real-time.
RFID Reader:
iPhone 4.0 may also carry a radio-frequency identification (RFID) reader. An RFID reader would scan RFID tags, which consist of a computer chip coupled with an antenna. Data stored on the chip transmits wirelessly through the antenna to an RFID reader operating on the same frequency as the antenna. Many retailers use RFID tags to track products in transit.
